Use your website to get more Likes for your Facebook page [guide]

Your website, your blog or even better your online hub (combination of website and blog) gets traffic from the search engines, shares on social network sites and returning visitors.

There are many options to show your Facebook business page on your website in order to get more likes. You can use:

  • the Facebook logo and add the link to your page
  • you can use one of the Facebook buttons
  • you can use Facepile

Like Box on your website But the most engaging version is the Like Box. It has several advantages:

  • The visitor of your website can like your Facebook business page without leaving your website
  • You can choose to show the activity stream – I think it becomes to big when you do
  • It shows the faces of people you know – this will result into a bit of peer pressure

Adding this Like Box can be confusing. You have to decide wich code you want to use and what code goes where.
Let me help you with this short guide.

5 steps to Add a Like Box to the sidebar

1. Copy the URL of your Facebook business page

Go to your business page on Facebook and copy the URL or link for your page.

Find your Facebook page

  1. Just type the name in the search box on the top.
  2. Find your Facebook business page in the list
  3. Or find it in the left sidebar on your Facebook home (click Facebook logo)
  4. Select the URL and copy the URL (Ctrl-C or cmd-C)

2. Settings for the plug

Now you go to the plugin settings for the Like Box this is the URL:

Adjust the settings to your needs.

  1. Past the URL
  2. In this example I set the width to 250 px so it will fit most sidebar designs.
  3. You need to adjust the height so that a row of photos and names is clearly visible. Here it is 335 px, this depends on how many photos you want to show, the width and the length of the title of your page.
  4. Select color scheme dark or light
  5. Select if you want to show faces. Yes do, this is the mean feature of this plugin
  6. Select if you want to show the stream or not, by default this is shown. I suggest not to show this.
  7. Leave the header as is

3. Grab the code

Now click the button ‘Get Code’.
You get a screen with 3 options: HTML5, XFMBL or iFrame
Facebook Like box use HTML5, XFBML or iFrames

Which do you use?

  • Not XFBML, because it will be stopped in time by Facebook.
  • iFrame, the easiest solution
  • HTML5 the best solution for performance of your website. HTML5 is the new, improved language for websites.

You only get one field with code (see image above). You can copy this code.

Go to the admin view of your WordPress website and the ‘Appearance’ – ‘Widgets’ section
Paste the code into a Text Widget in your sidebar

Use the code in the lower box (2. see image above) – copy this code.

5. Paste the code in your header

Nothing to do here. You are done. Easy right?

Now you need to use the code from the upper box (1. see image above) – copy this code.
Find a way to paste this code in the header of your website. Often this can be done in the header.php of your theme files.

If you are using the great Genesis theme (aff), you can use the Simple Hooks plugin.

Paste the code here.
