Danger: Facebook personal profile is not a business page #QandA

One of the things I get the most questions about for Facebook is on the personal profile. Questions like: “Do I need a personal profile to create a business page?”, “How can I start a page for our business without people knowing that I created it?” “Can I delete the personal profile after I have created the business page?”

Watch the screencast video about Personal Profile vs Business Page

This screencast video shows examples of pages and I show how you quickly can recognize a personal profile or business page.

Someone created a Facebook business page with my business name and it wasn’t me. #QandA

You are starting or just started a page on Facebook for your business. Then you do a quick search and you find a business page with your business name that you did not create. Whats is going on? Can you remove that page?

There can be a view reasons why this page is there:

  1. You or a colleague added an employer with the business name to their personal profile. They just added the name of the company without connecting it to a page. This happens often.
Facebook automatically creates an empty page, with the blue briefcase, with the business name.
  2. Someone checked in at your location using your business name. Here Facebook also creates a page automatically, a ‘place’.
  3. Someone, possibly a fan, started a page for your business

What to do?

Add your Facebook business page to your personal profile in 6 steps [video]

Often I get the question “I have 2 pages on Facebook now, one that I have created and one that I did not create. How can I change that?”

What most of the times happened was that at some point you have added your company as work experience in your personal profile on Facebook, without creating an actual business page.

This is when Facebook automatically creates a page. One that has this briefcase (see below) and you can not edit it.

This video explains what is happening and how to correct it including a short screencast.

Use your website to get more Likes for your Facebook page [guide]

Your website, your blog or even better your online hub (combination of website and blog) gets traffic from the search engines, shares on social network sites and returning visitors.

There are many options to show your Facebook business page on your website in order to get more likes. You can use:

  • the Facebook logo and add the link to your page
  • you can use one of the Facebook buttons
  • you can use Facepile

Like Box on your website But the most engaging version is the Like Box. It has several advantages:

  • The visitor of your website can like your Facebook business page without leaving your website
  • You can choose to show the activity stream – I think it becomes to big when you do
  • It shows the faces of people you know – this will result into a bit of peer pressure

YouTube video in Facebook page in 3 steps

On Facebook pages and walls of personal profiles I had already seen YouTube videos that you can play on the wall with one click. I want to do this, but how? After some searching I found how to do this. It is simple but not easy to find. So I am sharing this with you.

So you want to share a YouTube video without uploading it to Facebook?

The original article is in Dutch and is a big hit in Google. This article is No 1 when you search for YouTube and Facebook with 406 million results.

Step 1. Copy the link of the YouTube video you want people to play in Facebook

You are on a website and you see a video that you want to share on your Facebook page.

LinkedIn is removing profiles

This is something I have been giving a lot of attention in my articles for Facebook. Make sure your Personal Profile is all about you! So just enter only your personal name and no additions. And it is no different for LinkedIn profiles.

When you want to have a business profile on Facebook, just make a Business Page with your personal profile. If you don’t want to show who created the business page, you can do that.

Stupid me, I have been making that same mistake myself on LinkedIn since 2006!

Look, this is my professional profile on LinkedIn
LinkedIn profile

My email address is included in my name box. Why?
In 2006 I looked at how the network builders did their thang, and adding your email to your profile was a smart thing to do. This way people can add you as their contact easily.

Improve your Facebook page with the Report Promote My Fan Page Best Fan Page Awards

Sunday November 14th the voting closed and Leigh collected the final reviews of the panel. Leigh Kostiainen of Advanced Fan Page Solutions collected al the reviews in a full report. Download the report, look at the finalists, read the reviews and see where you can improve your Facebook page.

When you are working on your Facebook page it is interesting to look at the 13 finalists (see this overview of the finalists). Most of the finalists have 1.000+ fans, one even has 8.000+. Still, these Facebook pages have some points to improve their visitbility on Facebook and get even more ‘Likes’.

These are the reviews of Cathy’s Creations:

PMFP finalist Cathy’s Creations in Promote My Fan Page Best Fan Page Awards

Panellist 1 Review
The best thing that Cathy’s Creations is doing with their Page is fan engagement, great use of Reviews, use of an Etsy tab, and an active discussion board. They can improve the Page by adding a custom landing tab. The purpose of the Page is clear.

Panellist 2 Review
Best thing: Engaging all over!
Place to improve: Consider getting a Welcome Tab with email capture.
Page purpose clear? Very

Panellist 3 Review (mine)
The keywords “bead crochet bracelets” could be added to the title of the page to be better found in the search. Good selling from the Etsy shop on a separate tab. Landing on a welcome tab and showing some examples and call to action can win some more likes. Missing branding possibilities in the profile image, name of company.
Lots of topics in the forum. Good photo’s that support the sale and good interaction on the wall.

  • land on Wall
  • No welcome tab
  • Wall shows message of page and not fans
  • info box misses link to website
  • lots of topics in the forum
  • 12 reviews
  • Etsy store where you can buy directly
  • good photo’s
  • good interaction on the wall

Panellist 4 Review
The fan page of Cathy’s Creations has got nearly 1900 likers selling beautiful bead crochet bracelets for every age and size using a variety of glass beads, Swarovski crystals, pearls and sterling silver. The landing page displays a selection of those bracelets using an Etsy shopping tab.
The pictures are of good quality and it’s easy to move around and pick the item of your choice. You also have the possibility of using the share button on each item to share it with your friends on your wall.
The profile picture is not using the full possibility of 600px x 200 px but it gives the page a personal touch with the drawing of a girl showing bracelets on her wrist. This personal touch continues throughout the page, for example on the wall.
This is social media engagement at its best- being transparent and authentic. Not only is Cathy posting all the information needed about the bracelets, but posting jokes, homemade videos and pictures which keeps the community active and engaged.

Panellist 5 Review
Some very humorous updates and interactions on this page, something this community obviously enjoys. The use of photos is very important for this product and works very well. Inclusion of reviews (some are very flattering) and the Etsy store are great moves in making this a profitable Facebook Page. The conversion of visitors to likers to buyers will be improved by creating a custom landing tab and a branded profile pic. A strong page with a powerful mission, well done.

Panellist 6 Review
Cathy’s Creations has some beautiful bracelets to sell on their My Etsy tab. They were very eye catching. I would consider putting some of those beautiful images on a welcome tab that will serve as their landing tab and a call to action to capture email subscribers. They have a unique way of engaging with their fans which is apparent and effective.

En dit was de reactie van Cathy op het rapport:

“I will echo Jennifer’s sentiments. Thanks to all the panelist for your professional feed back. I wasn’t even aware a landing tab existed so I will be working on that today!
Also want to thank Trish, I think she needs a vacation :P”

Cathy already improved her page 🙂 Check it out.

Reviewing the 13 finalists of Promote My Fan Page 2010 Best Fan Page Awards

Leigh Kostianen, the star behind the Promote My Fan Page Facebook page, organised a contest for Facebook fan pages. First everyone could nominate the pages they liked best. Then everyone could vote for the 13 finalists, these pages got the most recommendations. Next to the voting there is also a group of experts that Leigh brought together to review the finalists.

Promote My Fan Page every day of the week there are actions to promote your or a Facebook page. There is Megaphone Monday, Tagging Tuesday, Work Swap Wednesday, Thirfty Thursday and Friendly Friday. Head on over and promote your page.

Reviewing these 13 finalists and a short review for a subset of all the nominees was very fun to do. As reviewer you get a chance to see very different pages, in design, attention, and interaction.

Most of the finalists had a good amount of Likes on their page, +1,000. The top pages really went into the battle in getting as many votes from their fans as they could. An occasional sarcastic comment on the wall of these pages show that the finalists took the award very seriously.
