Behind the scenes of my latest success post

When I started collecting blogs for my #30bestof lists I had only a few female bloggers. After a few weeks I had +50 blogs, started and maintained by women that I feel are great for inspiration on marketing, social media and entrepreneurship.

Celebrate success

Creating the post

Then I started to create the post. I wanted it to be more than just a list of the 30 blogs. Screenshots of each blog gives you, as a reader, a good impression within seconds.

Carefully I went through my list, visited each blog a view times. Some of the ladies I really admire have not written posts lately so I could not include them in the list. One changed the blog while I was writing the post from a personal blog to a company blog, removed from the list.

In the end I had a bit more than 30 women bloggers. I could not reduce it to 30 so I left the 6 extra blogs in the list 🙂

Add something extra

When I find such a list on the web I always love to follow these bloggers on Twitter. So I added the Twitter profile for each blogger for you. From the profile images on Twitter I created the above image with all 30+ bloggers.

Also I looked for a recent post in their blogs that gives you a good impression of her writing. I included one or two links to these posts or a video.

It took me about 5 days to compile the post, working on it for a few hours per day.

Promotion of the post

Once the post was online I tweeted about it 3 times the first day.

While compiling the post I tweeted about it a few times and people got interested. I send these people a short notice via twitter about the post being available.

Posted the link once on Facebook on my personal profile and once on my Facebook page. Last but not least I shared it on LinkedIn and in 2 groups on LinkedIn, once on Google Plus and once on Pinterest.

On Facebook and Google Plus I included the bloggers I was connected to, so they got informed about the post.

Now after only 2 days this post sky rocketed in my all time top 10 posts. It got 115 tweets on Twitter and 70 shares on LinkedIn and 36 likes on Facebook. The post was visited +1,100 times in just 2 days.

Most of the visitors came via Twitter and Facebook. The average time on the blog for the people who landed on this post is 1min20 more than total average time spent.

What can you do

Write great content. Create a large post that stands out. Include links to experts in your niche. Readers will see you as an expert.

  • Spend time to craft the post.
  • Don’t be afraid to write long posts.
  • Don’t be afraid to delete sections that are not perfect.
  • Promote your post, you did write it for people to read.

That was it. Hope you enjoyed my behind the scenes for this post.

  1. Thanks for sharing this behind the scenes info about compiling the post. I really loved the way that you put the post together You are right – you did provide quite a bit of extra content, which I think made all the difference in how it looked and read. Super to see how the post attracted traffic to your site. Your post has also driven new traffic to my site and added new followers for me on Twitter. Thank you again for including me and for doing such an amazing job preparing it.
